5. Claude 1 Launch

Anthropic's first commercial product, applying Constitutional AI at production scale for the first time.

Product Announcement
Summary

Anthropic's first public AI assistant, Claude, launched for early access. Trained using Constitutional AI principles. Positioned as a helpful, harmless, and honest AI assistant.

Key Concepts

Productionizing Alignment Research

Taking alignment techniques developed in academic settings and deploying them in production systems serving real users. Claude 1 was the first major commercial test of Constitutional AI, revealing the gap between research results and real-world deployment: theory works in papers, but operational systems expose edge cases and unintended consequences.

API-First Distribution

Rather than building a consumer web app first, Anthropic released Claude primarily through an API (application programming interface) accessible to developers. This distribution model let power users integrate Claude into their own applications, building an ecosystem before mass-market visibility. It was more cautious than OpenAI's web-first approach with ChatGPT.

Constitutional AI in Practice

The real-world application of RLAIF to train Claude. While the Constitutional AI paper was theoretical, Claude 1 showed whether the approach actually worked when deployed to millions of users making unpredictable requests. The answer was: mostly yes, but the tradeoffs (especially over-refusal) were more severe than expected.
